Professional responsibility and the internet

cloud computing

I am currently working on a paper about professional responsibility within the legal profession with regard to client data management and “the cloud” (internet based applications and storage).

I have noticed a general uneasiness in the Alberta legal profession about embracing novel web based business productivity tools that other professions have been leveraging for years. The main concern that I have heard repeatedly articulated has to do with security: will client information uploaded to the internet be secure against the service provider and will client information uploaded to the internet be secure against foreign governments.

I hope to provide an analysis of these concerns, including an analysis of the security measures some of the more popular service providers have implemented,a risk assessment of foreign governmental intervention, and a concluding cost benefit analysis of using cloud services in the legal profession.
